Strongholds - A possible feature in the PW.

While playing the OC I really enjoyed working with the stronghold. (Dont want to spoil the oc for any of you so I wont comment any further on that aspect.) I began to think, how could I incorperate strongholds into Rhydin that will inspire players to become leaders. Being able to log in at anytime, and work on building his/her own stronghold when player activity is low. The steps I would need to take for this would be to build a cluster of areas in spots all over Rhydin. Then create an NPC system that will help manage the stronghold. That shouldn't be much of an issue script wise, but I'm worried that if I took the time to do this, would anyone even bother to work with it? I'd like some input on this from you guys. I haven't done anything yet, so I'm leaving the floor open on this.

I don't know about the English speaking community, but I have lots of experience in German communities for different games, and I'ld say: yes, people would DEFINITELY use strongholds.

On PvM/PvP servers, having a "clan leader" would be essential, as would be having a "clan stronghold".

On servers with heavy roleplay, people would start asking for leaders after a while for roleplaying reasons, and if you give them the freedom to make one of theirs this new leader, he would need something to govern. Unless you already have thousands of players, managing the community itself won't be much of a challenge, so working on a stronghold would make things a bit more interesting for him.

Of course, it would need to be different from the OC stronghold (re-/building should take a lot of time, parts of the stronghold could slowly decay to start the whole rebuilding process again, maybe even with the possibility to demolish buildings in favor of others?), but I think the whole stronghold thing is a gread idea - in a PW even more than in a single player module!

Yeah, thats my line of thought as well. What also interests me is how I would orchestrate wars between strongholds. Real PVP, between two opposing strongholds. I can just see the storylines from everyone bursting out at Rhydin's seams. And to take in account the fact that not everyone can lead, I'll have to devise a system that will allow players to join strongholds. The question is though... How would I determine who is a real leader, and who is the follower?

Hm, a rather vague idea for the stronghold-leadership-thing:

  • A stronghold can be initially aquired by a (DM-guided) quest. It should only be possible for a group of [fill in desired minimum] people to even start the quest, and every stronghold could have it's own quest (depending on how much time the DMs are willing to invest).

This quest could be something simple as "kill all the undead haunting the stronghold" or "convincing the current resident (DM) to give it to you" to something more elaborate that could take a couple of weeks to complete (if done right, this could be quite some fun for both PCs and DMs).

  • As soon as the quest is finished, they have to decide on a leader and a vice-something, so the DM can assign those jobs.

  • From then on, those two have some special privileges (the leader more than his second-in-command, of course).

  • There's a counter attached to every leader, so when he does not log on for a certain amount of time, his SiC automatically gains leader status.

  • The leader can freely assign his SiC whenever he feels like it, and also can announce a new leader at will (forfeiting his privileges).

  • In case both are missing, the whole group wants a new leader or there are any other issues with the whole leadership-system, the group can simply contact the DMs, who will (or will not Laughing ) sort out any problems.

I have no clue about the stronghold vs stronghold idea, since I don't know what's possible with the toolset yet - but I think it would be best to not automate that process, anyway. To be true, that would sound a bit Ragnarok-ish to me Rolling Eyes
